Why Consider Genius Hour?
Can educators learn anything from successful businesses who clearly stand out from the rest? I recently read an article about Google's success with their 20% rule. The company allowed their employees to spend 20% of their work week on a "pet project", which had the potential to positively impact the company. This idea was hugely successful in part because employees were able to explore, think outside of the box and fail without consequences. The employees thrived in this environment and moral was high.
Are we any different? How about the students in our classroom? Would they thrive in a similar environment? What would we do with an hour of free time each week to work on something that we were truly passionate about? More importantly, what would we get from our students if we gave them the freedom to dive into a "passion project"?
